Reseller Hangout Podcast - How To Make Your First $200 Flipping Part 2
Melissa: On today's episode, we're diving into the second part of a six part series on how to make your first $200 from flipping items.
Rob: All right, guys. So last week we jumped into the first part of our series and it was finding those three to five items. If you missed it, jumped back, watch the first portion and then jump into this one. We're going to talk about more of, getting those items that you found in your house, getting them ready to list.
So let's get into it.
Melissa: So you should have had your three to five items now. And now we want to get them ready to sell and to make the most money. That's what we're about to try, like they're worth money. Now, how do you get the most money for them?
Rob: Absolutely. And if you did do the homework, you guys found those three to five items.
Now these are items that you haven't used in the last year, six months, to a year, whatever it is, these items might be a little dirty. They might be dusty from sitting in the closet from sitting in the attic, from sitting in the garage. So, those are the things that we have to think about in today, doing the work that we're doing today.
We want to clean those items up. You want to make sure that you're getting them wiped down, making them look like if you were looking for, let's take an example. You got a, what do you have a bicycle and a stroller? Stroller. Sure. In the garage, make sure that you clean that thing off, spray it with some cleaner, wipe it down, wipe the tires off.
Maybe there's some mold or something on it, clean that stuff up, clean it up the best you can, because if you were going to buy it, that's how you would want to buy it. You would want to buy it in that condition. So think about that for everything that we're getting ready today, make sure that you're getting in the condition that you would want to go and buy it from somebody.
Melissa: Now, I will put some, when I clean strollers specifically and I bleach them. So I put a water and a water and bleach mix in a spray bottle and spray it, let it sit out in the sun, rinse it and let it sit out in the sun. And that cleans them. A lot of times it's just the mold, we're in Florida. And we get, I know this is one item specific, but we get a lot.
We have a lot of humidity, so they get mold very fast, moldy. And so that just helps to clean them up. But I just wanted to add that if you have something with a cloth piece on it, don't bleach it because I've ruined not really strollers, I've ruined car seats before from trying to bleach them and not realizing they weren't nylon. They were cloth.
Rob: Side tangent, but that's okay. Think about the stuff you are cleaning. This is a very good point. Whatever, it might be a stroller might be a car seat, whatever it is, guys, it might be something in the house. If you are using cleaners, go on Google and make sure the cleaners you're using is safe to what the fabric is on it.
You don't want to ruin something. It's going to be worth less money if you do bleach something, if you do something that could cause damage to that item. So you want to, like we said, the goal here is to get these items cleaned to the best you possibly can and make them look nice. This will take a little bit longer than just snapping a picture.
But our goal is to make money on these items is to get the most amount of money out of them that you can.
Melissa: These are items you bought, you spent money on them. So you just make them look a little nice and you can make a little bit extra back.
Rob: Absolutely. So that's step number one is getting those items cleaned up.
Like we said, they've been sitting for a long time. I guarantee they got dust on them. I know our stuff that sits for a year under the bed, in the garage, up in the attic that stuff all has dust. It needs to be wiped down, cleaned up, made to look nice. The second one is getting some pictures. We're going to get these jokers listed.
So you want to make sure that we're getting the pictures done.
Melissa: So pictures are very important, but they don't have to be overwhelmingly difficult either. So they can be simple, but we want you to make more for your items. So you want them to be good.
Rob: And what is one of the important part of pictures? So we'll give you an example, you found something in the garage. So you throw it on the bench, this cluttered up bench and you just snap a picture of it.
No, it's not a good picture. We want a nice clean background. Now this will sometimes take a little bit longer, but think about a couple places where you could find a nice clean background, whether it's your dining room table, and you have a background on the wall next to it. You can set up a picture up there and use that as a nice clean background on the dining room table. On our kitchen counter top when I'm selling some small items, I'll throw it on the kitchen countertop.
If I have to move over, you know, Melissa's mixer or I have to move over a small appliance on there so I can get me a nice background, just try and do that. Try and find no clutter, no animals in the pictures. You want to find a nice clean area that you can actually take a good picture, so it looks presentable to the person who's thinking about buying it.
Melissa: Yep. And so also you want to make sure that you have good lighting. So lighting does not have to be anything like fancy or anything. You don't have to buy a light or anything. But just a well lit area, if you can, and you also can brighten your pictures up on your phone. Most phones have really good photo editors, but you don't want to change the color of the picture so much, which, it doesn't always matter if you're doing local sales, but if you start selling online, to a global market, then it definitely matters. You don't want to change the color of an item.
Rob: And some of those editors will do it, so you might have an item. That's grey, it might show it up as a taupe or something, you know, something when you're messing with the colors.
So you just have to be very aware of that.
Melissa: But you can brighten them up pretty good, and so they look good.
Rob: The best thing is natural light. If you can get natural light from a window, if you can get an area close to a window, that you can actually get a picture of it. And this is not super, super crucial.
But it will help. You want nice pictures when people are looking for stuff to buy, they want nice pictures of it. I mean, we capitalize as flippers. I capitalize on those people who do not do that, right, that are taking a cluttered picture that you can hardly see what is in the picture. They might have a lot of junk in there and they'd snap a picture of it.
Those are the kinds of things that buyers do not really want, but I will, because I'll go and clean up that item. I'll get a great picture of it. I'll show that it's working, all that kind of stuff, and then I'm able to flip it and make some money. So be that, the second side of that, that you're cleaning them up.
You're getting some nice clean pictures. So your buyers will absolutely want those.
Melissa: And you don't need any fancy camera or any other fancy equipment. We use our phones, we still use our phones for our cameras and, because they have amazing cameras.
Rob: Apple and Android. We use Apple, but Android has, I think their cameras are better than ours, but, it's one of those things that you do not have to buy special tools.
Just use your phone for doing this, for sure.
Melissa: Just take it a little bit of extra time to make sure you just have a nice clean area and a well lit area. And then your pictures will stand out compared to other pictures that are cluttered.
Rob: Very, very important. These are the fundamental steps of flipping, you guys.
This is what you're going to end up doing. If you love this, if you want to treat this as a side hustle or go into it as a career. This is what you have to do. These are like I said, the fundamental stuff that you want to make sure that you're doing, and then you just duplicate it and get better and better at it.
So, yeah, that is the step, so this is the homework. Okay. Three to five items. You already have them. That was, that was the first one. Now the second one is getting those items cleaned up, get those items cleaned up because next episode, we're going to talk about listing those items. We want to get them listed.
So you want to get the pictures taken, cleaned up, get them ready to go and get those three to five items ready. And how many pictures I probably would say for where we're listing them? I would probably say anywhere from what, three to seven pictures.
Melissa: Yeah. Depending on how many things are on them that you need to show like different sides of stuff.
So, oh, one thing about pictures that you, we had talked about that we didn't mention is if you have appliances is a great place to take pictures of those is in front of the garage. If you have like garage door.
Rob: Absolutely. If you have a lot of clutter in your garage, pull it outside, close the garage door down and take a picture right there.
So, and one of the things, so I'm kind of backtracking, sorry guys. Any imperfections on the picture, so one of our students actually went to pick up an appliance, the other day, drove an hour to get there. And there was a crack in a glass cooktop that they were trying to buy. You couldn't see it in the pictures.
They didn't make notes of that. They didn't do that. So they wasted two hours of their time going to this, that it was not worth it. So, make sure you are taking any pictures of imperfections, something that the buyer would want to know.
Melissa: You don't waste your time either. If they thought it was something different and then you go and meet up or whatever and it, they don't buy it.
Rob: Absolutely, absolutely. So make sure you're doing that. Make sure any imperfections, we want you guys to take pictures of those as well, anywhere from, you know, three to seven pictures, you can get as many, 10 or 12 pictures if you want. But at least three to seven pictures in there, so people can see it because we are focusing on a local listings.
That's what we're doing. We're not doing eBay. We'll talk about that in the next episode. Actually, yeah. Listing those on the platforms.
Melissa: Yeah. So we're going to, so after, by the next episode, you should have your three to five items and you should have pictures of all of them so that we can get them ready to list.
And so that's why we broke this down into smaller bits. So you have time in between to go do it. So we want to hear if you did it. So, also we're going to give you if you listen to the first episode, hopefully you did, or the first episode of this series, but if you didn't, we do have a list of 47 household items to resell.
So if you're trying to catch up and you need to go find those items, you can go download that. And that just gives you some more ideas of stuff to sell. That can be worth a little more money than $20.
Do you have another download on pictures? No, we don't. So that was our download, guys. Go grab it. If you didn't do it, and then we will see you guys on the next episode.
