Reseller Hangout Podcast - How To Make Your First $200 Flipping Part 3

Rob: What's up, guys, on today's episode, we are on the third part of our series to make your first $200 in flipping.

Rob: All right, guys, so today we are on the third part of this six part series on making that first $200 and we are super excited. So we're getting those items listed.

Melissa: So just to recap a little bit, so from the first and second part of this series, the first part was, and if you haven't had a chance, you can go back and listen to them.

We're just doing kind of short episodes that you can go into, do the thing at the end of the episode, so we can get to that goal. But the first part we had you go and get a three to five items out of your house. So that could be anywhere from under your bed and your closet, in your garage, anywhere that something that has been sitting for a long time, that is at least worth $20 that we can get listed.

Rob: Absolutely. And then the second part, the second episode, if you missed it, go back and watch it. We were talking about cleaning those items. Listen to it, go back, and clean those items and make sure that they are ready to get pictures and then get the pictures taken.

So we went into some more details on the last episode,

Melissa: on getting good pictures.

Rob: Jump in there, all this stuff that we're teaching, guys, these are the fundamentals, these are the foundations of flipping that you definitely want to master before you're ready to go to that next level. So in today's episode, we are jumping into listing.

So you've got those three to five items. You got them cleaned, you got some good pictures now, what do we do with them? Let's dive in.

Melissa: We're going to list them and also we're going to talk about pricing your items.

Rob: Yeah, go ahead. Well, I was going to say the two platforms that we are focusing on for this whole series are going to be Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp.

We use both of those platforms. We buy a lot of stuff on those and sometimes we list on those platforms. But the thing about these platforms is they're very, very, user-friendly, they're very quick to get short wins. And that's what our goal is with you guys is finding these items, get them sold, get these wins, and make that $200.

Melissa: Awesome. And we are going to dive into a little bit of eBay at the end. So, but these are the easiest way. It really is simple to make a couple hundred dollars right away. So we are going to go through the listing process and actually, we do have a full video tutorial. If you want to see the how to, and we can go grab that link or the link will be in the show notes and you can go check those out.

So we just have like the actual, how to list on those.

Rob: For both, for Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp. So you can grab those in the show notes. Don't miss those. If you guys need some help with that, definitely do it. The first thing you want to do for this portion of our series is go download, OfferUp.

If you don't have it, you probably already have Facebook. Make sure you jump into Facebook Marketplace. That's where you can buy, you can sell, you can do all that stuff. Make sure that's the first thing to do right now is to make sure you have both of those platforms so we can get the items listed.

Melissa: So when we have our pictures, we have our items, we have our pictures and now we're going to list really the first thing we need to know is what are we going to price our item at.

Rob: Good point. So we're going to figure out what these items are worth. If you know what you paid, you bought these items new, you know what the retail is on the items, that's a good start. So, and it's going to fluctuate depending on condition of the item. Now, if you're pulling out a shirt out of your closet, it's a high, high brand name and you never used it, still got the tags on it. You're going to make more money than 50%. We try to shoot for a used item, we're trying to get 50% of retail on that item and it fluctuates depending on the condition of it.

If it's brand new tags, you never used it, never worn it, whatever it is, if it's in great condition, you can jump that up quite a bit. Maybe even 75% of retail, depending on the item itself. So, but that is our goal. That is our starting point is retail. And then you're going to know exactly what 50% is of that retail.

And that's the biggest thing you have to know first. Now if you didn't buy it brand new. You bought it from a yard sale and it's been sitting forever and you're not using it, let's jump on a Google, go on to Google type in the brand name type type in them, the model number, and see what Google is saying that retails for at stores or whatever it is.

That is the first resource we want you guys to use. And then the second one of course is

Melissa: eBay, so you can go check out what is selling, what has sold. You can put your exact item in there and see if it has sold recently. How long do they hold the list for? So for the last 90 days, you can see, and cause prices do fluctuate.

So like now, a lot of vintage stuff is really selling really well. So, so that stuff might be worth a little bit more than when you got it for a couple of decades ago.

Rob: Yeah. You might not know how to do this. So go into eBay. If you have the app on your phone type in the item, the model number you can do the item itself or the model number both in there, go to the filter button, hit the filter button, and then it'll allow you to do it, scroll down and it'll say completed.

Tap on that completed listings. And then, do the results and it'll show you everything in green actually sold everything in black or red did not sell. So you want to go through and you want to look at the sold items, items that actually sold. That'll give you an idea of what your item will sell for or the highest price that it did, and it gives you a good starting point for being able to price it.

Melissa: And also a note for pricing for on the local apps is if you know, what kind of, what you want to get for an item, build in a little bit of wiggle room. So people will OfferUp, they're going to offer you like the whole platform is that they're going to give you an offer. So give yourself a little bit of wiggle room that way they still think they are getting a deal.

But you're willing to go with it at this price. Like, you know, you can take X amount of dollars off.

Rob: Negotiating is a huge portion of this business.

Melissa: And you'd be okay. Yeah. And you'd be comfortable and they would be comfortable or they're excited to get a little bit of a discount.

Rob: Absolutely. That is a huge point and very good point is negotiation is a huge portion.

People don't want to pay what it is actually listed for. So always add a couple bucks, extra $10, $15 would make those people feel like they're getting a deal. And when they offer you less, they might offer you $20. Come back and do the negotiation. Hey, you know what? I can really go to this price and negotiate with them.

They're feeling like they're getting a good deal. They're not paying full price or not paying their price, but you're negotiating with them. That is a huge point. So it leaves some wiggle room in there for sure. Yeah. So next point is when you're ready to get these items listed, the two important, well, I guess three really are the pictures you guys have already tackled.

You got some good pictures. The next important portion is the title. You want to make sure you have a title that is good with some good buzzwords in it if somebody is searching for that item. So remember when people are looking to buy these items, the only thing they're really able to see is that title.

So however many characters, Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp will allow you to do, I would fill those out with buzzwords that people will be searching for. Now, for example, let's give an example of a baby stroller.

Melissa: We keep going back to strollers.

Rob: Because we sell strollers.

Melissa: And that would be one of the favorite things that we sold locally too. So we sell, it depends on what price point they're at.

And that's something that we can talk a little bit about. If it's at a certain price point, it's worth it to sell on eBay versus local. So it has to be worth it to ship.

Rob: And a good thing to remember on this is definitely that vintage stuff that might be in the attic. Ebay probably will bring a lot more money than an actual local Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp.

We'll get into a lot more specifics with that down the road but right now, yeah, what you have to know is the price that eBay's bringing on this, you might not be able to get locally. Sometimes you can. But you might not be able to get for that local price. So you have to take that into consideration and pricing too.

Melissa: So what if it's somebody is listing a vintage record player?

Rob: Vintage record player.

So you can go on and see what the prices are on eBay. But like I said, they might not be the same exact prices that you're going to be able to get.

Melissa: But what would they put in the title?

Rob: Oh, okay. Title wise. Yes, because we are on titles. So if you're doing a vintage record player, I would definitely use both of those words.

Vintage, record player. And I would use the name brand if it is, what is it vintage one?

Melissa: Sony?

Rob: No, there are more vintages older. And well, I guess the antique is older, so you could use vintage. But all those buds buzzwords. So you want to put the brand name of it, the model of it, a model number, all that kind of stuff you want to put vintage turntable, record player, photograph, whatever it is.

Make sure you have all those buzzwords in there. So if I'm going to buy that, I'm going to type in, Hey, phonograph record player, and I want your listing to come up. So you want to make sure that the title has all those buzz words that somebody is going to be searching for and even put yourself in the shoes.

Hey, if I was going to buy this record player, how would I search for it? If I'm looking to buy this, what would I do? A lot of people fail on this because they might just put record player. That's the only word they'll put in the title, because they're going so quick. You guys are missing out. They're missing out on so many buyers who might be searching a different way than just record player.

There might be a lot of other words that somebody might search for. And that's what you want to make sure that you're encompassing when you're building this title out.

Melissa: And people don't just usually scroll marketplace. You do, but most people aren't scrolling marketplace. They're just seeing what they're what's there.

Most people have it, they know that they want something and they go to look for it. So they're going to be searching for those items and we want your item to come up and the algorithms do change and they fluctuate and stuff. Dive into that a little bit. What are some things you can do once you list your item, if it's not getting views or so, but we're focusing on listing it today. So you've got your items,

Rob: pictures, title, description. Now this is really, really important on eBay, but we're not jumping into eBay. So you definitely want to note the key features of, or imperfections or stuff. Descriptions, like I said, we're giving the fundamentals.

This is what you're going to build on. If you start flipping for a side hustle or full-time, whatever it is, these are the fundamentals. You need to get a good description together of the item, the condition that's going to be again, relisting the brand name, the model. Maybe you want to put in some size dimensions if you're doing that record player and it's an old photograph, maybe you want to put it's, you know, 48 inches tall.

It's, you know, 24 inches wide and 24 inches deep, whatever. Put some of that stuff in the description that the buyer can look at it and get a better idea of what's going on with the item and any imperfections, hey, it's got a broken hinge in this and it just lists that stuff out. So the buyer's not coming to you and being like, hey, I didn't know this was cracked wood, or I didn't know that this hinge was broken off and then they're wasting their time and your time and they're upset about it.

So you definitely want to make sure all that stuff is in the title. I mean, sorry, in the description, when you're describing the item.

Melissa: We don't want our time wasted either. So getting good pictures, good description. And then after you have all that ready to go, both platforms are going to prompt you to want to ship it.

So that is something that like ship your item. We're to only talking about for this part is just local. So this is all local pickup things change a little bit whenever you want to ship it, like your pictures do have to be very clear and you want to use as many as you are allowed to if you're shipping it.

But for local pickup, they get to see the item before they actually hand you money, so it's not as important to have all the little data.

Rob: And we still don't do shipping on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. They do offer it and recommend it, but we don't do it because there's not a great way to.

Melissa: They don't have good customer service. You can not get ahold of anybody on facebook.

Rob: Absolutely. It's all online. You can't really talk to somebody and get it done. So we have not switched over to that. Some buyers, some sellers will do really well, especially if it's like a $20 or $30 item and you can ship it easy. It could be worth it. We sell items that are a little bit bigger and worth a lot more.

And if something were to happen and we can't get a hold of customer service, it's not good. So that's why we choose not to ship through them. So we can't really recommend them. But we do know people who do well with it. So you can make that decision if you want to ship it out, or if you just want to sell it locally.

So, but for this series, we are recommending local. That's what we want to do. If he has a following that we do, we want you guys to get them listed, get them sold, make that $200. That is our goal is to make the $200 in two weeks. So, all right, guys, you have your item, you got your pictures. Now getting them listed.

That's your homework for tonight. Get the three to five items listed on OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace. We're going to do a little bit of cross posting here. So some people might not be on Facebook Marketplace and some people might not be on OfferUP. So you want to cover both of those avenues. We want to get them listed and we want to get them in front of as many people as we possibly can, in the next week.

So we can get those items sold. So get them suckers listed. You'll have three to five items listed before then next episode.

Melissa: And keep us posted on how it's going. We want to hear from you, probably the best way to get ahold of us is through Instagram. Just DM us on Instagram. It's @fleamrktflipper. But there's no vowels in market. So we'll put that below too.

Rob: Show notes, don't forget too if you guys need some help with the listing process, we have the videos in the show notes. Guys, we'll have the links. Go down, check them out, OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace. We'll give you those as well. Jump in and get those.

Melissa: Right. And this is your encouragement to go get it done. I know it's not, like it's pretty simple. But it's the doing it and getting it done.

Rob: And you have the weekend through this one, we're jumping back on Monday. And that is where we're actually bringing you the fourth course.

Melissa: And this is actually the best day to list something.

So Friday is typically the best day.

Rob: It is the best day cause people get paid, they're going through the weekend and that's when you can sell it. So make sure you don't miss this step.

Melissa: Yup. Get them listed and we'll see you the next episode.
