Reseller Hangout Podcast – How To Make Your First $200 Flipping Part 5

Rob: Okay, so you have interested buyers now, what is the next step? What do you do?

Melissa: We're on part five of a six part series on how to make your first $200 from flipping.

Rob: All right. So this episode five is on fulfillment. So hopefully you have those items.

Let's do a real quick recap. You guys found those three to five items. You got pictures, you got them ready to go. You got them listed on either two platforms, really, you should be on two platforms, Facebook Marketplace, and OfferUp.

Melissa: Always want to cross post if you can, more eyes on your item.

Rob: And now they are working for you, you should be getting some, potential buyers reaching out to you, either saying they want to buy it, or they should ask, be asking you a question.

So now what is the next step when you do find that buyer?

Melissa: So now we're going to fulfill the item and get their money.

Rob: That's right, guys. So you have to, and there's a couple of notes that you have to be very, very careful here, which that's going to roll us into people that are scammers out there trying to pull a fast one over you.

Yeah. So we're going to give you a couple of tips on looking out for those and making sure that you are not getting scammed on these items.

Melissa: Yes. So pretty much right now on both of the apps you're going to just have your conversation with the person, the buyer, and you're going to have a time to meet up, a time and place to meet up.

Always be safe, always meet in a public place. I wouldn't recommend at night, you know try and do it in the day.

Rob: Yeah.

Melissa: Meet up, bring somebody with you if you want. But we always just either go to a busy strip mall, grocery store.

Rob: You can do your local fire station, police station if they're close to you. Typically if you're going to have a scam or somebody is crazy, they're not going to meet you at the fire station or the police station.

It's always a good rule of thumb. We've never had anything crazy happen to us. Always be safe. We want to make sure that you're in an environment, if you can take somebody with you, that's even better, but try to be in an environment where there's other people around where something bad should not happen if there are crazy people.

Melissa: And we don't want to scare you, like, it's not like- we have done this over and over and over again.

Rob: Hundreds, if not thousands of times, guys, so don't worry about it and just be safe. We always want to give you the safest tips we possibly can.

Melissa: And we would recommend not meeting up at your house if you can.

I know some people do porch pick-ups and that's probably fine too. We don't also go far so we don't meet up at the house, but we also go to somewhere really close by that way if they don't show up, we didn't take any time out of our day to go, you know, maybe 10 minutes.

Rob: This is a great point because you will find flaky people who will tell you they're going to be there at two o'clock and then they don't even show up. They don't message you. They don't do anything and you're just screwed. So that is a great point. Do not go out of your way. Keep it within a mile of your house.

Don't, if you can not meet at your house, don't do that. Definitely go to, like we said, a strip mall, fire station police station, the bank, someplace where there's other people around, but don't make it far out of your way, because if it is a loss, you're only a mile from the house versus you going 30 minutes, to meet somebody halfway.

Melissa: Somebody will ask you to come to them. I mean, if they want it for an extra delivery fee, then maybe we can meet you over there.

But one thing you possibly can run into as well. If somebody's going to ask you to meet them halfway. It might be in 30 minutes, might be an hour. It might be 20 minutes.

Rob: You might meet them halfway. And then they're going to try and talk you down on the price. So that's another going to be a waste of your time if you are set on the price and it's going to make you feel bad because now

Melissa: you just show up, you have time invested, and you're like, ah, fine, whatever.

Rob: Safest thing is, tell people, listen, I can meet you here.

This is the only place that I can meet you and make it within a mile, two miles of your house. So it's not too much out of your way in and out of your schedule to do it.

Melissa: And most people know that if they're buying the item, they have to come to you. Like we know if we find something across town, we do not expect the buyer to come to us.

Or the seller, we're going to them. So, and you can also schedule it in your day. So maybe you're going to the grocery store, you know, at four o'clock, I'll say I can meet you at the grocery store at four o'clock. And it build it in. So it's not taking extra time out of your day because we want to be as efficient as possible.

We don't want to waste time. We want you to make money, but not waste time doing so.

Rob: So some common scams that you guys might run into, if somebody reaches out and says, hey, I want the item, I'll pay you an extra, hundred dollars for shipping on the item. I'm going to send you this cashier's check, or I'm going to send you this money through cash app, whatever it is, if it sounds too good to be true,

please trust me it probably is. Typically when you're starting out, I would say cash in hand for any item that I'm selling.

Melissa: There are a lot of options to pay with apps now.

Rob: Venmo, cash app. But we have had somebody try to do a scam on us, through cash app, tried to tell me they sent money. They sent me an email.

If you do not see that money in that app, do not. If you are using a cash app or Venmo open up the app when you're with the person and make sure that if you're giving them the item, you have that money into your account and it is available. It's not pending anything like that. Just be aware of that because some people will try to scam you on that.

Best, like I personally, I'm an old fashioned guy. I would take cash in hand. I would tell people, especially for these items that they're not paying. I mean, I don't know how much you're selling it for, but anything under a hundred dollars, it's not that hard to go by an ATM and pull out some twenties. Meet at a gas station, meet someplace where you can get change if they had to.

It's not that difficult to do. I personally would do that, but if you're more comfortable with doing Venmo, cash app, Zelle, I think there's another one, you can definitely do it. Just make sure the money's in your account.

Melissa: Make sure the money's in your account before you give over the item, because we've had one. I remember somebody.

You thought they were real at first, which usually doesn't get passed that far, but they got your email. They emailed you and said it was there. So you open the email and it says that your funds are there, but then there, the account shows no funds. So like, yeah, sorry. No. And that guy even got on the phone with you

Rob: He did.

And that was my rule of thumb before this is years ago. I know a scammer's not going to get on the phone with me. I've had them tell me I'm off shore and an oil rig and, or I'm deaf. And I can't, I can only communicate through my computer. I had so many of those different things throughout my, you guys know we've been doing this over 25 years.

So I've had some experience of scammers and typically I can read them out once you know that kind of stuff. But this guy went, the one Melissa is talking about, was a baseball glove. We put on, I think it was offer up. He said he paid me through cash app and the cash app, he sent me the email and saying, hey, your money's here.

It's on hold. And then he got on the phone with me and told me I needed to go buy these gift cards and this stuff. And I'm like, oh, listen, listen, okay. If you want the glove, give me the cash in hand or into my account. He's like, it's in your account. I said, no, it's not. I'm looking at my account right here.

It's not in my account. I'm not taking anything from an email. If you want the glove, the money goes into my account.

Melissa: And that is another thing, they want you to buy gift cards, cause they're not really giving you the funds and then you go buy the gift cards. So don't ever follow one of those things because it's not good.

Rob: Typically the best rule of thumb is item for cash.

That is the best way. If you're in doubt, make sure item for cash is the best way to do it. And like I said, if you do do one of those apps, make sure it is in your account. It is available immediately. Don't do anything pending. Don't take any email saying that they sent it to you. It is actually in your account or cash in your hand.

Melissa: And we don't want to scare you again. Like it's not.

Rob: It's us trying to keep you prepared.

Melissa: Just prepare you because there are people out there trying to take your hard-earned money and we want that not to happen. So, and another one is, that I've heard, like I can't pick it up, I'm picking it up for somebody else. I get to like the, the next person, cousin of somebody, and then they have to do another transaction through PayPal or whatever it is.

So, so when you, it sounds too fishy, if it sounds fishy, it probably is.

Rob: So just be on the lookout. They're not out there. I mean, it's not everybody, but sometimes you will find those. Typically the people who are legit are going to say, hey, can you meet up? Or when can you meet up? I want to come and pick it up and then they might even ask you, hey, would you take Venmo?

If somebody is in front of you and you're taking it at one of the apps. Absolutely. You just, like we said, we just verify that it's in there, but that's not that fishy for somebody to be in person with you and sending you money right there, because they didn't want to go get cash. But like I said, I'm old fashioned.

I prefer the cash, but if that's the next best thing, I would do it as long as they're in front of me and I can see it before I actually hand them the item. So definitely keep that in mind.

Melissa: You're going to meet up with them close, not too far from your house. You're not going out of your way to do it.

You're going to respect your time, safe place, public place.

Rob: Preferably in the day time with a friend. If you could take a friend, if you can't no big deal, just do it in a public place.

Melissa: And, get cash if you can, or an app standing right in front of you. So those are the things, and make your money, like that's the most exciting part.

Rob: Absolutely. And DM us and let us know how it is going, guys. We want your feedback. We want to know, hey, I just sold my first item. We want to know that we to celebrate that with you guys.

Melissa: In the next episode, we're going to dive into a little more on eBay.

Rob: That's right. That is our bread and butter. Like we said before, 80% probably 90%, 95% of our items are sold on eBay because it just reaches a bigger crowd, but we will get into that on the next episode.

Melissa: So let us know if you've made a couple dollars. Let us know.

That's it. All right, you guys are rock. Have a great day. We will see on the next episode.
