Reseller Hangout Podcast - Top 10 Flips Of 2022 (Just Over $50K In Sales)
Rob: What's up, pro flippers? On today's episode, we are giving the recap of our top 10 sales of 2022, and it is take two.
Melissa: Take two.
Rob: All right, guys. So we are talking about the top 10 flips of 2022 today. Excited about our numbers that have come in for 2022.
Melissa: And we did record this podcast and we actually published it and everything and I totally screwed up on some of the numbers.
I was going back and doing some of the numbers to do a short with some of this with the top 10 videos, and I realized that I was way off with the totals. Like it was the totals ones. And I think what happened was, if you listen to this already, I'm sorry, we're gonna go to right straight to the, the meat of it and then we'll go through the each one.
But, I think I double negated. No, I double I. We, we actually had higher profits than we reported, so, I think I took away that other number seven more than I should have or number five.
Rob: That's alright. We're gonna jump through it and we're gonna give you guys the info. So we'll give you the, the overall how much we made on these top 10 flips.
And these were not all of our flips of 2022. These are just the top 10. These are the best flips of 2022. We did those, we did the totals. We screwed up a little bit on the first one, not a big deal. We'll show you guys what the numbers are and then we'll go forward with that.
Melissa: So, all right, so we're gonna start with the totals in case you already listened to this, and you don't have to listen to the rest of it, just so you know what they actually were.
So our total sales were $55,200 out of these 10 items of 2022. Yep. So we haven't run all of our numbers yet. So I'm excited to see what that total is.
Rob: $55,200 total sales out of these 10 items. Super, super excited. You guys might be wondering, how in the heck did you sell 10 items and make $55,000? Well, we're gonna tell you in just a second.
Melissa: So, all right, so then our cost of goods, which is, is really the coolest number because this is, is all that. We had to go out of pocket totaled $1,560. So to make $55,000 in sales, we totaled $1,560 in at that cash out of hand, out of pocket.
Rob: That's it. So that's, that's all we had to invest to actually get this.
Now, we still had some other fees that we incurred along the way after we sold them. For first and foremost, that's it. This is all we had to invest to get these bad boys in our possession and get pictures of 'em, get 'em listed. And then after that we have some more fees that actually came on, but $1,500, just over $1,500 to make over $55,000 in sales. I love it.
Melissa: And okay, so eBay fees and we had one that was PayPal fees and this includes ad spend too, if we did promoted listings, $5,038 and we'll dive into each one in just a minute. Yep. But $5,038.
Rob: So that was what we paid eBay and promotion fees, any of the fees we incurred on the sale of these 10 items.
Melissa: Shipping costs were $2,870.
Rob: $2,870. That is what we paid in shipping.
Melissa: Some of these went freight, some of 'em went in boxes. I think one or two were local. One was local pickup, I think. Yeah, one was local pickup, and so $2,870. Yep. Our total profit was $45,732.
Rob: I love it.
Melissa: So I was a little over $10,000 off last time.
I do not even like was when I was doing the, what was I doing? Like can I really not do math? I don't know what was going on.
Rob: Happens to the best of us.
Melissa: Like I had all the other numbers just about right. But I must have, I don't know if I took that one off twice or what happened?
Rob: Whatever. So that is awesome. Over $45,000 in profit and we made $55,000.
Now I wanna call out something. This is really cool because a lot of people are, people see high numbers for eBay sellers or for resellers who do a ton of inventory, who have a ton of sales going through their profit margins are not this big. It's not something where we only spent $10,000 out of pocket.
Oh, $1,500 out of pocket, well, sorry, out of pocket, but we only had to spend even in all the fees. After everything said and done. We only had to spend a little over $10,000. To make, you know, the $45,000 in profit on these flips, which is amazing. This is so, so awesome.
Melissa: Yeah. High profit margins is definitely what we are going for, so we don't wanna just have high sales. It matters what you're taking home, so.
Rob: Yep. And don't take it the wrong way. I'm not bashing other resellers. Reselling is a hard business, especially people who put a lot of time and effort into it and have tons and tons of inventory. It is hard work guys. I don't care who you are. That is hard, hard work. So we're not taking anything away from other resellers.
This is kind of why we've chosen the business model that we have. It's less sales, less overall work to make the profits that we make. That's why we love what we do. But again, I'll say I'm not bashing any other resellers. It is hard work and it is. It is. You love what you do when you're a reseller, for sure.
Melissa: Yeah, because it is work. All right, let's dive right in. So number 10 was the JennAir that we sold for $1,500. The vintage one we picked up on the road trip. So absolutely.
Rob: So we ended up buying two of these, well, a JennAir cooktop and then we bought a double oven, from one seller. He was selling both of these, both on the top 10.
Awesome. So we'll get to the other one in a second. But these were, we paid a hundred dollars a piece for this one. And the double oven, they were matching stainless steel, JennAir. This was, I believe it's a 45 or 48 inch. We sold this one and actually somebody picked it up. It sold it, and I sold it for a little bit less.
Because I knew I wouldn't have to create it, I wouldn't have to box it, I wouldn't have to do any of that stuff. The buyer actually was meeting up with me, and picked up the item.
Melissa: We were actually at a conference and we had to pack it up with us. It was a local conference so we had to pack it up and gave it to them during the conference. So.
Rob: So $1,500, we sold it for, spent a hundred dollars. What were the other fees?
Melissa: Fees. We did have some ad fees plus eBay fees were $161. Okay. $0 to ship. And so the total profit was $1,239.
Rob: $1,239! I love it. Anything over a thousand dollars, I love celebrating. I mean, that's a killer, killer flip when we can get up that high.
Melissa: The knee rehab machine, it was a $1,600 sale that we paid $60 for at the flea market.
Rob: Love this one! Yeah. We actually got this knee rehab. So you strap your knee into it, you sit down on the ground or a table, put your knee in and it's a motion that moves your knee back and forth, expensive machine. I think retail on it was over $3,500 for anywhere, somewhere around between $3,500 and $5,000. So we actually sold it for $1,600. Killer deal. Somebody got a great deal on it. It was a nice piece of equipment.
Melissa: And that's a big thing to note too, is we're, when we're doing these higher value items, they're still around 50% of retail. Absolutely. So that's, it depends on the item, but that is our average, around 50% of retail because it has to make sense. The buyer needs to be getting a good deal. You have to be able to find it for a great deal in the local market. And you can find a lot of these things in the local market.
Absolutely. Fees were $204 and shipping costs were $92, which brings our total to $1,244 for profit
Rob: $1,244. I love it. Another $1,200 profit. Gotta love that one.
Melissa: The sauna for $1,700. Goodwill Sauna for $1,700.
Rob: This one was so cool. This thing, I, when I saw it, I was like, I gotta have this, this is so cool. It was a lot of fun. It was a not a stainless steel. Oh man, what am I trying to say? It's fiberglass. Fiberglass. Thank you. A fiberglass door on the front of it. It opened up. You could sit down inside of it, close the door, and then it had steam. It was a steam sauna. So really, really cool. Saw it at Goodwill.
Paid $200 for $200 at Goodwill, and then we sold it fairly quickly. It was a lot of fun. We made some cool videos and pictures. It was a lot of fun, but what was cost and profits and all that?
Melissa: Fees were $210. Shipping was $150, and the total was $1,140 profit. So.
Rob: $1,140 is what we made on this one. I love that. Still over a thousand dollars. Love those flips.
Melissa: Now the next one was at number seven, the JennAir, the second one part of the set that we bought. So a hundred dollars for this one too. We bought on the road trip.
Rob: This one was cool. So it was a double oven. It matched the other cooktop, but different people bought 'em. I didn't list them together. I usually lift that, list it apart, or separately. We paid a hundred dollars for this. Sold it for what?
Melissa: $2,000.
Rob: Two grand. The cool thing about this was I listed it, woke up the next morning, and it was sold. It sold, I think in less than 12 hours. Once I listed it, somebody really wanted it.
This actually did go on a pallet, so we did have shipping fees, strapped it on a pallet, got it shipped out, made it safe. Love it. So where are all the numbers on this one?
Melissa: We are at a hundred dollars invested. Fees were $257. Shipping was $125. Our total was $1,518.
Rob: $1,518, over $1,500 profit on this one. Love it. And we had a tie for number seven.
Melissa: Actually, I took out the other one that went with the square Ds, just so I wouldn't mess up the numbers.
Rob: Cool. So down to number six.
Melissa: Number six is the Windsor cleaner, because it did beat out even though it had the same amount of sales, it beat it out in profit.
Okay, so $2,000 sale. Only $60 invested though on that one.
Rob: Cool. And this was a carpet extractor, I think it was. It was a walk behind, so it actually had 24 volts, two batteries inside of it, walk behind and it either, scrubbed floors or carpets. I don't know really what it did, but it was a Windsor and I can't remember the model that it was wave or no, the wave was a sweeper. We did, I don't remember. But anyways, it was a carpet, carpet or a floor scrubber, whatever that was. We sold it for $2,000, paid $60 for it. What were the rest of fees on this one?
Melissa: Fees were $255. Shipping was $157, so the total was $1,528. Made $10 more profit on that.
Rob: I love it! Over $1,500 in profit. We love it when we're able to do that. So let's take it down to number five.
Melissa: Number five was the chiropractor table that we got for free on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. OfferUp it was.
Rob: OfferUp, such a cool story. I reached out to this guy, he had this chiropractic table listed for, I think it was $700.
I offered him and I looked it up. It was an expensive table. I reached out to him and said, Hey, would you take $350, $400? Didn't respond back, until three weeks later and said, Hey, if you come and pick it up today, I'll sell it to you or you can have it. I won't even sell it to you. You just have to come pick it up.
My new table came and I need to get it outta the office today. So I messaged him back and said, I can come at this time. And he goes, I'm not gonna be here. Can you do it first thing in the morning? And I said, absolutely. So he went there, gave it to us for free, sold his.
Melissa: You would've thought he would've done $300, but he didn't .
Rob: Sold this bad boy. He needed it done quick. Yeah. And he didn't need the money, so he just got rid of it. And the first person who he thought of was me. I love it. We sold it for $2,250. $2,250. And we got it for free. I did have to fix one little thing. There was a small hydraulic leak on one of the lines. When he was moving it, he pinched one of the lines under.
All I had to do is go get a little brass nipple, and then they plugged the lines back in together. That was all it needed, fixed it. Three bucks. $3 from Ace Hardware, not a big deal. Sold it for $2,250. What were all the fees on this one?
Melissa: The eBay fees were $200. I, also put the refund in this.
That's fine. That's fine. So, were $200. The shipping was $125. We did have a partial refund. I have $247, a partial refund. He left the thing outside.
Rob: Yeah. So when this was delivered, the buyer didn't have a place to put it inside of his, his, he was starting off a new chiropractic PR practice, left it outside, it actually snowed on it. And he went back and forth with me through messages on this when he got it, one of the seals on the rams because it was a hydraulic ram, one of the seals on the ram cracked because it got below freezing, cracked that seal and he wanted me to pay for that seal, which he wanted like half of his money back.
Yeah on this.
Melissa: Well he asked for a lot.
Rob: And I told him, listen, this has nothing to do with. I shipped it in good condition. There was nothing wrong with it. You left it outside, it got snow. It went in low below temperatures.
Melissa: It was like a week or two, wasn't it?
Rob: Yeah. It was crazy. So it went below temperatures. I'm, I don't feel like I'm responsible and I shouldn't have to give you anything, but out of good faith, I will refund, I think it was what, two something, two, judge, it was.
Melissa: $247 is what I have on paper, but I think it was like 10, $10. I just, I put 'em together, so, okay. It was a little over $200.
Rob: Cool. A little over $200 we gave back. And once I told him my side of it, I'm like, I shouldn't even have to give you anything, but I'm willing to do it just to help you out with the repair cost.
He was happy and he said, yes, I appreciate that. So, we took the refund, we made a little bit less money, but we didn't pay anything for this. So you can't be that upset. I try to keep my buyers happy, but I don't let them walk all over me either. Yeah. I You have to stand firm with what you're doing.
Melissa: You delivered the product you said you were gonna do.
Rob: Exactly. Especially if you have nothing to do. This one, I had nothing to do with anything that happened to it. I still want to, I wanna put my foot back down and I wanna stand up for what I'm doing.
Melissa: And don't let people threaten you with negative feedback or anything. So people that you be, will take care of that if they try to do, it's called, it's extortion and they won't let you.
If they say, well, I'm gonna give you negative feedback. Yep. If you don't give me x amount of refund or whatever.
Rob: So, and this guy didn't do anything except to me. He didn't do that. But some buyers might try to do that. So just know that you have rights.
Melissa: Doesn't happen often, but every once in a while.
Rob: That's it. Let, don't let people walk all over you. And this guy, like I said, he was a super nice guy. He didn't see my side of the story. He just saw that he had another thing fix. Yeah, exactly. Something else to fix on it. And he didn't like that. So when I showed him my side of it, he was like, I, I totally get it.
Thank you for even offering me anything. Still great buyer, great whole process. It was a a, a pretty good process, the wholesale on this. So awesome.
Melissa: So I added those fees together.
Rob: Cool.
Melissa: From the eBay fees and the refund was $547. So the total comes to at $1,578 for the profit.
Rob: $1,578. I love it. Still over $1,500. I was already motioning number four, so.
Oh, we're not, I didn't give the profit yet. So total profit on that. Over $1,500. I love it. We made it over $1,500. So, now we're getting into some fun ones, and this is number four.
Melissa: We made it from $2,200 to $7,500. Number four was the crown wave that we got from the trash.
Rob: Got this out of the trash killer deal on this. I love it. Got this bad boy, ended up replacing a wheel. One of the wheels, it still worked, but it had a crack in the wheel. Got a new wheel, it was one bolt. I pulled it out, put the new wheel on it, not a big deal. And we put four batteries into this bad boy. So, killer deal on this.
I love it. Got it out of the trash. Didn't pay anything for it other than those repairs and sold it for $7,500.
Melissa: $7,500. So eBay fees, you did have this promoted. So, and with the fees was $462. Cool. And shipping was $500. Cool. And the profit was $6,538.
Rob: $6,500, I love it. Love that deal. Jumped up from $1,500 to $6,500 in the profit range. And yeah, we love it when those things happen. These, you have to hunt a little bit more to get into the over $5,000 profit ranges, but they are out there and we got this bad boy for free, so killer deal.
Melissa: The turbo chef.
Rob: Number three, turbo chef.
So we picked up two of these on our road trip, sold them fairly quickly. The first one we sold for?
Melissa: $8,500.
Rob: $8,500, paid $400, so we went $400 out to make $8,500, on this deal. This was a cool story on a road trip. Went to buy one from a guy. He was listed it for a thousand. I offered him $500 for it.
He said, yes, come pick it up. We ended up going to pick it up. When I got there, he, I said, this works right. And he said, yeah, if it doesn't, I have three more of 'em or two more of 'em. Come back and I'll exchange it. And I was like, really? So you have two more? Would, and I only had $800 cash on me.
I said, if I took two of them, would you do $400 a piece? And he looks at me and he goes, sure. So he went back in the back and got another one and brought 'em out. So he bought two of these bad. First one sold $8,500. Killer deal. What were all the fees in?
Melissa: $400 for the, what we paid for it. $904 you had that one on promoted too. Cool. That was a high promoted, you had to spend like $400 in promotions. Cool. Shipping was $125 and total was $7,071.
Rob: $7,071. Just over $7,000. $7,000 in profit plus this thing sold fairly quick. It did sell quick, did not have it that long. Love those deals. And then we are down to number two.
Melissa: Yeah, number two is another turbo chef.
Rob: Turbo chef. This was the second one that we bought. And we still have one more of these bad boys. It's listed from a different guy. Yeah. No, it's turbo chef, but it's from a different guy. That we bought after we got these two, we got another one. So, this one still same deal, $400.
We bought it sold it for $10,000. What are all the fees and?
Melissa: Fees were $300. This one wasn't promoted. Oh no, that's, you know that one was, yes, because it went on PayPal fees were $300. Shipping was $150, so profit was higher. $9,150.
Rob: $9,000 in profit. I absolutely love that deal. So this one was a killer deal as well. $9,000 on a single flip. Love it only had to pay $400 on it. So killer, killer deal. And number one.
Melissa: All right. The square D panels. Okay. So this was more than one transaction, but it was one item. You had a lot of items that you bought. how many did you buy at one time?
Rob: Trailer full. I don't remember any exact number. I think we had 30 or 40 of these.
Melissa: Yeah, at $10 a pop is what they average for what he spent on these panels. So over this year, which, okay, I'll get to the numbers. We sold 24 panels, so we had a $240 invested into that for $18,150, so.
Rob: $18,000 and 24 panels.
I love it. Now, this one broke up actually into two sections because one buyer bought 10 of these panels. Yes. At one time the rest,
Melissa: and some bought one, some bought two. Yes. Some bought, I think one person bought three or four.
Rob: And it was way cheaper for me to actually ship out the 10 panels than it was to ship the other 14 out because I had to ship them out, multiples at a time, that kind of stuff.
So, that was one thing noting on this, what was our total fees on this one?
Melissa: Total fees were $5,038 and total shipping costs were $2,870. So, if we sold 'em by one, we had to pay more fees and shipping. Yeah. If we sold 'em by the lot, then we got to pay a lot less.
Rob: So that was one of the other cool things with this, with this, eBay, the guy who sold, who bought 10 of them, eBay's fees, if you don't know how they work, once you get $2,500 on certain categories, The majority of the categories we sell in, once you hit $2,500, the fees dropped from 12% down to 2.35%.
Now eBay gave us fees on this one. They, the guy who bought 10 of 'em, they did 10 separate transactions and charged it because it was under that $2,500 threshold. They charged that 12% on every single one of them. We called eBay up, they were cool about it. They said, okay, yeah, we see it was one transaction, we'll go ahead and give you the 12% at the $2,500, and then we're gonna drop the rest of the funds, which I forget exactly how much that. That $10,000. I mean that,
Melissa: they gave you $700 back, I think.
Rob: Yeah. So it was like $700 in overage fees and funds. Just because I noticed that they charged me 12% for all of 'em, versus the 12% on $2,500 and then dropping it to the 2.35%.
So cool thing to note. But overall profit on all of these that we sold, and this is thanks to Covid, because Covid manufacturing, all that stuff went behind. Yeah, that was, and people couldn't get these builders were like, okay, I gotta get. We were still at like 50% of retail selling these, some people were price gouging and going well over retail on these bad boys.
And we were still. 50% and that's why they sold so quick. So overall profit on that?
Melissa: So $14,726,
Rob: $14,000 on these 24 square D panels that we sold. I love it. I love it. I love it. Love when we can do that. Those are the top 10, for 2022.
Melissa: Revised, revised version. So I do have to add though on that last.
We were talking about this earlier is that a lot of, some of these items have carried us like for the year. Like there was one time he bought 60 Sleep Number mattresses for this was a couple years ago and we ended up making like $50,000. There's a lot on that. So cuz we started out selling him as a one unit and then we started splitting it up as parts and then we made a lot more money on the parts.
So, so, but it's always been the lots, like then it was the what are these square panels and now you bought 12 stretchers like that are selling and so.
When you can buy ' em bulk, you can usually save and still sell, make, make a lot of money on 'em.
They keep paying you over and over again. So if you can buy in bulk, it does help if somebody and it, and I don't always love it cause I'm like, ah, it seems like a chunk of money to go out.
Although $240 wasn't bad to go out that, but, no, absolutely not. It's a little chunk of money, but then it just keeps paying you over and over if you can do it. So, and if you know like the it, the retail's there, so.
Rob: Yep. Awesome.
Melissa: So we have those revised numbers, $55,200 in sales, cost of goods $1,560, fees, eBay fees, PayPal fees, $5,038.
Shipping costs $2,870. So total profit after shipping costs, fees, and cost of goods was $45,732.
Rob: Just over $45,000 in profit. Absolutely. I love it. Totally love it.
Melissa: How'd I screw that up so much the last time?
Rob: I love it. I love it. So what's up, if you guys want to check out more of how you can get into flipping, how you can get involved, where should anybody go?
Melissa: Go to freeflippingcourse.com. We would love to let you like, that talks about some of the mistakes that resellers make. So five mistakes that are common resellers make that cost a lot of money. So, yeah, check it out and we would love go check it out to see you there. So thank you.
Rob: You guys rock. Have a great day, see you on the next episode.
