Unlock The Secrets Presentation
Put our hands together for Rob and Melissa Stephenson.
Rob: What's up guys? Woo. We are super excited to be here today, guys. Thank you Russell and the ClickFunnel team for throwing this event and giving us the opportunity to talk to you. We're very, very excited and nervous, but we wanna show you guys how you can make an extra $200 in the next week by using your smartphone.
And without investing a dime on inventory. So this is the car that started me on my flipping journey when I was 16 years old. And we'll get back to this in just a second.
Melissa: But first, what exactly is flipping items? So it can have a couple flipping, can have a couple different definitions, but for our terms, it is taking an undervalued or unwanted item from one market to another market that values it.
So usually from a smaller market to a larger market and we get paid for it. Treasure hunting. So we buy locally at flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores and apps. And we sell mostly on Facebook marketplace and eBay.
Rob: So this is the car that I wanted when I was 16 years old. The problem was this was the car that I was driving.
Now picture this car faded, paint rust. It was a hand-me-down for my two, uh, older sisters than myself. My parents bought this car for $400 from an auction. That should say enough. It made it through three kids. But I wanted to get this car. Now, my dilemma was I was working at Red Lobster at the time after school.
I was only making $125 every two weeks. Now, for me to get this car, I was going to have to work for over four years to be able to get this car. That wasn't acceptable either. I wanted to get it quicker than that. So, I thought back to my childhood and I thought my parents, I come from a big family. My parents went to yard sales, for two reasons. When I was a kid, they dragged us along to yard sales too. We had a blast, but they did it for two reasons. One reason I have six older sisters. I'm the youngest and only boy, and they took us to yard sales to provide for us. We are a big family. Expensive. So we got secondhand stuff from yard sales.
The other reason was my parents had a side hustle. Uh, they would buy stuff from yard sales. They would bring it back, clean it up and sell it in the classified section. Uh, this was so. Pre eBay pre-app and all that kind of stuff. So the really, the only way you could sell, sell you stuff was in the classified section.
So they would do that. And I got modeled that at a young age, and I remembered back to that when I wanted to make some extra money. So I asked, I went to my mom, I said, mom, I'm trying to buy this car. I need to make a little bit of extra money. Can you help me start flipping items? And she said, absolutely.
The Salvation Army has a new auction. I've been wanting to go to it. So let's go there tomorrow morning and see what we can find. So I went there the next morning with my mom and I found this bad boy. Now, I had no idea what this was. I've never seen one before, but it's a Nordic track ski machine. Uh, I bought it for $5.
How in the heck could this not be worth more than $5? So I took a chance on it, bought it for $5. Brought it home, cleaned it up, and then got it listed on eBay. This was in the early days of eBay when you could not list buy it now you had to list it as an auction. So I listed it for a seven day auction, and I sold it in seven days for $350.
That was my aha moment. Normally I had to work for two weeks to make $125. With this flip took me less than three hours total time spent on it. I made $350. So that put me on my journey of flipping and trying to figure out what else I could find, what else I could buy and flip, uh, to make money. So
Melissa: my story's a little bit different with flipping.
I married into this whole flipping gig. I had no idea that you could actually make money selling on eBay. I knew what eBay was, but I thought you just kind of bought random things on there. , and I didn't know you actually could make some money until I met Rob. I'm still not sure my mom. Understood, uh, what I was getting into and was a little nervous about our finances when we first met.
Uh, but it was all good, so I went the more traditional route. I got really good grades in high school. I knew the next thing that I was supposed to do was to go to college. I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I just knew that was the next step, ended up spending $90,000 on my degree, my four year degree.
Got my bachelor's degree, graduated with a bunch of student loan debt, and then right outta college, got a job. For $250 a week riding horses at a dinner show. So nothing with my degree. Now, I don't regret, I have to give a little disclaimer. I do not regret one bit. Uh, going to college. I just regret the amount of debt that I
Rob: left with, so, so you guys might be able to relate more to Melissa's story.
You might be in school right now, getting good grades. I was the opposite. I went through high school, barely making it through high school with a C average. I'm pretty sure I'm dyslexic. I was never diagnosed, so I went through high school thinking that I was stupid, but I had to keep a C average so I could play sports after high school.
I did not want to go to college, which was okay. Because I was flipping stuff. No matter what reason, you wanna try to pick up the side hustle, whether you want to go and pay through college, pay your way through college, or you just wanna do it to get to the next job, the next opportunity that you have, this is a great opportunity for people to be able to make that money for the bank roll.
Melissa: So why should you flip items for an extra income? That's a great question. Love to tell you, so first you could start with. Zero money. You don't need any money to get started, selling on eBay. So there's a couple different ways that we can do that. So the first one is to sell stuff from your
Rob: house.
Yeah. You guys might remember a couple weeks ago, Russell went on and told everybody, find some of those items that you guys wanna sell, get pictures of them and bring 'em to the event. So we can do that. So we're gonna get to that in just a
Melissa: minute, and then there's also free items everywhere. So we're gonna walk through a couple ways that we find have found free items, a lot of free items over the, over the years and the first way is there are free items on
Rob: the curb. That's right. Melissa and I walk a mile almost every single day from our house to our downtown area. Uh, We walk down there so we can jog on the trail, but it's the same road we take every single day. We have made tens of thousands of dollars from items sitting out on the side of the road, just like this bed.
It was sitting on the side of the road. I saw it on our way down to run on the trail on the way back. It was still there. I was super excited. Grabbed, uh, my truck once we got back home, went and picked it up. We sold this in a couple days on Facebook Marketplace for $150. Uh,
Melissa: just a real quick radio flyer that we saw sitting with a whole bunch of other trash.
Brought it home, wiped it down, sold it on Facebook Marketplace that day for a quick
Rob: 25 bucks. We didn't have to take the truck back for this. We could wheel it home with us. This chair, a blue accent chair, the same thing. It was sitting on the side of the road. , it had a small, broken piece, uh, up underneath It took me like five minutes to put a piece of wood in it, screw it together.
We sold it on Facebook Marketplace for $50.
Melissa: And then this Dyson again picked from the trash just sitting with a whole bunch of other items, and we just, uh, tested it. It worked fine. Cleaned it up, threw it on eBay, and it sold for $90.
Rob: So another great way for you guys to find free items are by telling your friends, your family, your relatives, what you're trying to do.
If you're trying to save up to go to college, if you're trying to save up for your first car, whatever the reason is. If you tell people what you're doing, they will give you stuff to sell. You just let 'em know that this is one of, uh, Melissa's clients. Melissa used to be a personal trainer and she had a client that was a, rental home.
She, what was it? Rental properties. Thank you. She managed rental properties. Every time somebody would move out of the property, if they left stuff in the house, she would call us. She knows that we. Flip. She would call us and say, Hey, I don't wanna throw this stuff away. If you guys wanna come and get anything out of it that you want, you can for free.
This is a bed that we got, that somebody left in the house. Uh, we got it. We sold it on eBay for 590, uh, $89, almost 600 bucks that somebody just gave us to sell because they knew what we do. And
Melissa: some of our other friends, just didn't wanna mess with listing something and shipping it. So they gave us these speakers, sold 'em on eBay for 150 bucks, just telling people what we do.
That's it. And then,
Rob: So we've told you $600 is the highest. Another great place to look for free items are the apps. We have so many apps at our fingertips right now. Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, uh, Craigslist, most of the apps, and there might be more apps in your area. You have to see what resell apps are available to you.
But most of the apps actually have a free section. People will list stuff for free. , and if you look in those, Disclaimer, if you do look in those apps, nice expensive items that people are trying to give away, they will go quick. This is a soft serve ice cream machine that I got on OfferUp. Uh, I was searching OfferUp when it actually popped up.
I emailed or I messaged the lady, uh, within five minutes and said, Hey, I want that. She gave me the address and told me to come pick it up. I got there in 45 minutes and she gave me this machine. I asked her when I got there. I said, so what's the deal with this? Is it broken? She said, no, it's not broken. I bought it a couple months ago.
The building that I'm in doesn't have the right power source to power it, and it's been sitting in our storage room for the last three months, two or three months. I just wanted outta here, so I said, okay, I'm your guy. I'll take it. I took it. We sold it on eBay for eight, $8,500, 8,500 bucks. Yep.
Melissa: Woo. Woo.
Rob: The potential is endless for free items if you're actually out there looking for them. So the second
Melissa: reason why you should flip items for an extra income is you can run your whole business from your smartphone. We don't use any other equipment really. We take all of our pictures on our phone, we list the item, we communicate with buyers.
We look up the the price that we should list it for. We do everything from our phone. You don't need any other equipment.
Rob: Yeah. Smartphones have changed the industry. Back when I started this, I told you guys. Yeah, it, it, you, you had to do a lot more. It took a lot longer to list something. Now you can list something in literally less than a minute.
Who
Melissa: has a smartphone? Woohoo. Hey buddy. All right. , and then the third way, it is one of the quickest ways to make money. , you can get stuff listed today and we can start making money this week. Uh, so. Flipping was always our side income before it became our full-time gig. And it was always there when we needed extra money, quickly for unexpected bills, if the car broke down gifts, because sometimes Christmas sneaks up on you and you need to go make some money quickly.
And then a big one was always at vacations. Vacations. Rob loves to go on vacation and we, we tend to do things last minute and he would usually come to me and say, Hey, can we. Go on this cruise in three weeks or we can we go to this place or whatever. And it, if it wasn't in the budget, then I would just say, okay, uh, go flip something and make the money and then we can go.
And he did 100% of the time he made it happen. We went to some cool places we have, so,
Rob: all right. Yep. So I still remember my first cruise that I took when I was 19 years old. I found this amazing deal, $499 on a Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas. I believe the name of the ship was, but I found this amazing deal, $499.
I called my buddies up and I said, guys, I found this cruise. We gotta go on it. My buddy said, where are we gonna get $500 from? I said, guys, come on. I'll help you guys go and find some stuff at the thrift stores, at the flea market. At the auction. We'll buy some stuff that we can turn around and flip, and then we can, we can buy the cruise.
So we did that. We ended up making $750 in a period of two weeks, and then we were able to book the cruise. Had an amazing time and an extra $250 to actually spend on the cruise. So you can make money very quick with this side hustle for sure. So
Melissa: why eBay? So eBay has 152 million registered users where your local apps only have about 30 to 40,000 registered users.
So you have a lot more eyes on your item. Now that doesn't mean that all 152 million people are looking for your item, but it just is a higher chance. That you will find the person that needs the item that you have, and then you can also price higher than you can on the local apps because there are more people looking for it.
And because you're willing to ship it to
Rob: them. That's right. You guys might remember the story of my parents was modeled to me when I was young. They'd buy stuff from yard sales, which had the potential of reaching maybe two to 300 people through a weekend. They would buy stuff from there, bring it back and sell it in the classified section, which.
Everybody read the newspaper back then classifieds, where you sold stuff, so you had the potential of reaching 30 to 40,000 people. That's what we do. We buy locally from the local markets, the local apps, and then we throw it onto eBay because it's global, it's worldwide that you can actually sell stuff.
Melissa: All right, so now how do you get started? So we talked about this. The first thing is to find three to five items around your house that you no longer use. , and hopefully you guys got some pictures already and we're gonna go through a listing in just a
Rob: minute. Yeah, a good rule of th b, if the item has been sitting in your house for the last.
Six months to a year, you haven't used it. You might not use it again. That's where you guys wanna start with those items
Melissa: defined. So some ideas for, uh, things that you could sell. Some old electronics, , collectibles. Some Pokemon cards are really hot right now. Uh, sports equipment and anything. Also vintage.
So vintage from the eighties and nineties, eighties and nineties. Stuff is hot right now because we're vintage. , so all that stuff is really hot right now. ,
Rob: kids go check out your parents' attic. Make sure you get permission, but check out your parents' attic. There's probably some really good stuff in there that you can
Melissa: flip.
Ask them before you sell it though. All right? And then you're gonna clean it up and get pictures. So just dust it off, wipe it down if it's been sitting for a little while, , remove the dirt and dust and then you're going to get pictures again. You don't need any fancy equipment. We do everything from our smartphone.
You don't need any fancy camera, you don't even need, like, you just need good lighting. You don't need any fancy setup. , So a well lit area and no clutter in the background. Just a nice clean background. If you can find a, a wall somewhere, it doesn't need to be anything fancy. , and get as many pictures to show every angle as possible, which we're gonna talk a little bit more about pictures in a minute.
And then no animals in your pictures, in your listings. And then we are going to list your item on eBay. Woohoo. So we're gonna walk through this together, but before we do that, we have some free items for you to come get.
All right. So how do you know what an item's worth we're gonna go through. How do we know what the items we just gave you are worth? And how do you know how to find it?
Rob: Yeah, what it's worth. So eBay's really cool. They allow you to see all the items that were sold in the last 90 days. , you can go in, type in the item that you have, or the item that you're trying to sell in the search bar, hit completed listings, and it will show you everything that has sold in the last 90 days.
That gives you a great idea of what your item will sell for. So this is really, really cool that you're able to do this.
Melissa: Yes. And if your item is not on eBay, sometimes the eBay sold comps are not there, or it hasn't sold in the last any days. It doesn't mean that you still, you can't sell it. You still definitely could sell it.
But to find a price that maybe you should use, you can check Google for their retail cost. And a good rule of thumb is about 50% of retail is what you can sell it for, and that will vary on the condition. But a good rule of thumb is about 50%. But that doesn't apply to collector items cuz some of those items.
Sell more for what than what they retailed for. So now let's go through the items that we, that you guys got. All right. So the first one is the Palm Pilot from the nineties.
Rob: The cool thing about this item is I was actually at a thrift store with my daughter, uh, when we found this. , it is still sealed in the box.
It's from the nineties and has never been opened. Uh, we founded a thrift store, somebody donated it. We paid $7 for it. You can see that the eBay comps show, uh, that it's $75. The thing you have to remember when you're doing the comps, you have to compare apples to apples. If I was to compare this with one that's opened or used, it's not gonna be the same as one that is new.
Now the new one up there is $75, so that's roughly what you can get for this item.
Melissa: And the bike wheel
Rob: bag, the wheel bag. So we actually got this for free. One of the, uh, vendors, I bought wheels, , and he threw in this bag with, , the wheels that I bought on eBay. Right now, no red wheel bags are listed.
This is a very expensive brand. , none of those are listed right now on eBay. So this should sell fairly quick, uh, for 40 or 50 bucks.
Melissa: the Lava lamp.
Rob: The lava lamp. We picked this up at a yard sale in Orlando, , just a couple weeks ago. Yeah, a couple weeks ago, picked it up, paid $5 for it. And you can see that's the same thing with comparison.
You have to make sure you're comparing the right size, the right brand when you're looking up for prices that you want to, uh, compare them to. So this should sell for $75 and
Melissa: the green. Also means that the item sold the red or the black or black means that it didn't sell. Thank you.
Rob: Good point. Yeah. You want to definitely be comparing the green items.
That means the item did sell. , the other ones are people ask. You can, you'll notice on eBay, people ask some crazy amount of prices and they can't sell 'em. Well, the green ones mean it did sell.
Melissa: And then we have the flight com headset.
Rob: This is cool. We just bought this last weekend in Colorado. , we paid $5 from a local, uh, yard sale that we were visiting, and this is a really cool one that's gonna sell for a hundred bucks,
Melissa: the ring and doorbell.
Rob: before we do that, guys, you guys understand how cool this is. I had to work when I was working at Red Lobster for $6 an hour. I had to work a long time to make a hundred dollars. This is with that flight, uh, head headset, whatever it is,that, that's awesome.
That's awesome that we can go and buy something, spend less than an hour taking pictures, listing it, and then selling it to make that kind of money. It's really, really cool. All right. And the ring doorbell. Sorry? The ring doorbell? Yes. This, we picked three bucks for three bucks. Yeah. We picked this up, I believe this was at a thrift store.
Mm-hmm. For $3 and this one's never been used either. It's been opened, so sell it new open box, but it should sell for 50 bucks.
Melissa: And then this one we also picked up just recently. Yeah. The last one.
Rob: No, the one more. Oh, one more. , the last one that went out. So this is, I don't know anything about this to be honest with you.
That's a really cool thing about this business too, is you don't have to know everything. We found this at a thrift store in Colorado, last weekend, and we paid, what was it, two bucks for it? Mm-hmm. I had no idea what it was. I still don't really know what it is, but at. If you have a brand name, a model, you can look them up and you guys can sell anything.
That's the really cool part. Now this one you can see, uh, it sold for roughly 85. I think that's conservatively, it should sell for about a hundred bucks, 85 to a hundred dollars.
Melissa: Yeah. So a lot of times people ask like, how do you, not how can you sell something if you don't know what it is, but if you have the brand name and the model, you just have to be able to type it into your smartphone and look it up and
Rob: it's right there.
So, and they think, I have this unlimited knowledge because we do this a lot, have unlimited knowledge of all these items. You, these don't. You just have to be able to pull out your smartphone, get on eBay and look 'em up. All right, the last one,
Melissa: the mask.
Rob: The mask. This was a cool one. So we picked this up from our local flea market a couple weeks ago, paid $5 for it. Now this, you remember what Melissa said. If you can't find comps on eBay, you have to go to Google. A good rule of thumb, like you said, is. 50% of retail. Uh, the Google average on this is roughly about $550. , and this should sell, if you go by that rule of thumb about $250 for this mask, which that's awesome for a $5 investment.
Melissa: All right, now let's get those items listed. Awesome.
Rob: All right. Let's walk through the listing. Yeah, we're gonna walk
Melissa: through a list, the listing process, and yeah, we're gonna have to probably go through these a little bit quickly, but that's okay as we get the item listed. So first you're gonna hit that selling button at the bottom of your app, and then at the top you'll see a big blue button that says, list an item, and you're gonna type in what it is you're selling.
The more that you can type in. Brand and model number, the more that, those specific items will show up, cuz the next slide, the next screen will be, select that item that you have, , or continue without a match. So if you can't find the exact one, you wanna continue without a match. If you can find the exact one, then all of the details.
Uh, continuing on will be filled in for you. So you can do it either way though, then we're gonna come to the condition of the item. So new, new, other used for parts not working. We typically sell most of our stuff for used. If it is still in the box, we would click new other. So we don't ever sell anything new cuz we.
Yeah, we don't really buy anything new. And you can also sell some stuff for parts not working and we sell a lot
Rob: of those things. Yeah. If you guys remember that ice cream machine that we got, the retail on that machine that I showed you, we sold for $8,500. Retail on that machine was $24,000. I had no way of testing that machine to guarantee the buyer that it was working.
I sold it as is. The gentleman who bought it, he bought it off eBay, but he came and picked it up in person, went through it, looked at it, saw that it was all in good condition before he actually paid me. So you guys, you can sell stuff if you do not know if it works or not, you can still sell it for parts or repair and let the person who's buying it due to the uh, uh, the inspection on it.
Melissa: All right, and then you're gonna add your photos. So this one is important. Pictures are very important on
Rob: eBay. They are. You have to remember when you're selling something on eBay, the buyer does not get to feel the item. Look at the item before they receive it. They're going off of your pictures and your description, so you wanna make sure e uh, eBay allows you to take 12 pictures and put, just recently they've allowed you to put a, a video in there as well.
But you want to make sure that you're taking as many descriptive pictures as you possibly can. All sides top bottom. Any scratches, scrapes, scuffs, anything like that, you wanna make sure you're doing that in your listings because you have to remember, you want your buyer to be, , expecting what they're getting.
You want them to be happy with it. All
Melissa: right, then we're gonna add your title. So you wanna use as many descriptive words as possible. The item, the brand name, the model number, color, size, , and you, you, it doesn't have to make sense, so it doesn't have to be a complete sentence. That makes sense. You just want as many search words.
Rob: There is possible. Yeah. Another important thing is the title. If you want to buy something, think about what you would put in the search bar to find that item. You need to make sure that those are in the title. , so your potential buyers, that's what they're probably gonna type. That is the, you have 80 characters on eBay, and that is all that you have to attract the buyer, is that title.
Melissa: All right. And then, We're gonna add your item specifics. So some of these will get filled out already if you clicked, , one of the ones in the beginning, the more you can put specifics in here, the better, because then your item will get shown more in the searches that eBay throws it, and then you're gonna pick a category.
eBay's really good about picking the categories, but you can also change it if you want it to go in a different category. And then the description is the next most important part. So
Rob: another important part, because when you're taking pictures, it might not be enough. You need to make sure you're putting a description in it, telling what you took pictures of.
If there's a scrape on the lower left hand side, uh, whatever it is that you need to call attention to make sure you're putting a sentence in description as well in your description. So people not only see the picture, but they can relate to it and they know that it's there.
Melissa: Because you used to sell items in mint
Rob: condition back in the day when I started eBay, and don't ever use the words excellent mint condition.
That's the mistake that I made when I started in eBay. Something that I got used from an auction or a flea market. I thought it was amazing. When the buyer receives that, they might not have the same definition of a mint, , excellent condition that you do. So try not to use those words if you, if you can. It usually caused me a lot of problems in the early days when I did eBay.
Melissa: All right, then we're gonna price competitively. So we talked about pricing already, so you can get your comps from eBay, , or. Retail costs from Google and also when you set your price, you're gonna do buy it now or auction and buy it now is really where eBay's gone to, , over auction.
So we use that 99.9% of the
Rob: time. Yeah, it's sometimes it's hard to find your potential buyer in a seven or a 10 day period. Uh, so if you do the buy it now price and it is a competitive price that it should sell for, it might take a little bit longer than that sometimes, but that. We'll save you from selling your item for way, way too little because you only reach so many people in seven to 10 days on a, on a live auction.
Yeah.
Melissa: And then we're almost done with the listing. We're gonna select shipping. , and calculated shipping has really, , made it a lot easier for people get to get started with shipping and so you don't lose money on
Rob: shipping. A lot of people get hung up on eBay because they have to ship the item out.
eBay has changed the industry when they've came up with calculated shipping. So when you're listing your item, get pictures of the item, get a box that you're gonna ship it in, package it up actually before, , you list it and you can get the dimensions of that box. So you have three dimensions and the weight, you can do all that stuff while you're listing your item.
You fill all this information out and then eBay's gonna do the back the. The, uh, shipping calculations on the backend. So if I'm selling from Florida, somebody in California's gonna get an exact amount for shipping different than somebody in New Jersey. eBay's gonna do all the backend work, so you do not lose money on shipping.
Melissa: And then you're gonna select your preferences, like if you accept returns, your handling time, and usually you can set that once and then it's set and you don't have to change it again unless you wanna change something on it. And then we're gonna list your item. So get live, list it, and it's live.
So once you get your item listed, there are other options that you can do on eBay. You, if you can just copy and paste everything you just did. eBay is probably the most intense one to list on. So once you have that one done, you can copy and paste on other platforms. So we use Facebook marketplace too. We sell 95% of our items on eBay, but we also use Facebook marketplace too. And other, there are several other options as well. , up and coming. So you could always cross post and then you're, Item gets seen by even more
Rob: people. So yeah, there are people that are scared to buy on eBay and if you cross post it to Facebook marketplace, you might reach some more people. There'll be more people on more, buyers, potential buyers on your, on your item that you're actually trying to sell.
So we definitely cross post, but the two main things that we do is Facebook Marketplace and eBay.
Melissa: So I know we had to go through those, the listing a little bit fast. So if you still wanna go through, we did create a video, at that url, so we don't need your email. You can just go in and. Check the listing video.
We walk through the listing on the computer and on mobile cuz it's a little bit
Rob: different. Yeah, it is different guys. So we put two videos here. Like Melissa said, you guys don't have to give us your email. We just wanna make sure you guys have the tools. Don't be afraid to start this. You have to start to learn.
You'll make mistakes. Every business that you do. You make mistakes, but you learn from those mistakes. Uh, just yesterday morning I woke up to a $600 sell on eBay. The problem is we're in Phoenix. The items back in Orlando. So I made a huge mistake by not putting my eBay store on vacation mode. Guys, I've been doing this for over 20 years and I still make some mistakes, but you just learn from them.
I emailed the buyer, told him, listen, I won't be back for four weeks. , yeah. So I can't ship it out until we get back. And he was perfectly okay with it. I said, if you don't find a replacement in that time, then when I get back I can ship it out to you.
